Me, defined. August 23, 2007

Posted by regivizz Marathon, Motivation, Run Digg! this story! Digg! this story. , trackback

While out for a jog this morning, I tried to make a list of things that keep me motivated.  One of those things is the marathon I ran.  I mean, come on, if I can run 26.2, I can finish out that next half mile, right?

It’s funny though, how often people that I know through other people will come up to me and say “You’re a runner, right?” Nobody ever did this pre-marathon.  Now it happens all the time!  Realizing this makes me understand that even though I’ve been a runner at heart for a long time, and have spent countless hours through the years running, my friends and family did not take me seriously until the marathon.  I’m no longer introduced as “she’s a science person” or “she does microbiology stuff” but it’s now “meet my friend, she’s a runner.”

That motivates me.

What motivates you?

That which I’ve not yet achieved . . . Too many times on my school reports the words “Could do better” were used, and now that’s what drives me.
o Could train harder
o Could race further
o Could laugh harder
o Could support better
o Could think smarterer.

I think there is something magical about the marathon. I can relate to what you are saying about running 26.2. Once you put yourself to the test and pass that test, you feel so strong, mentally and physically. I think that is one of the reasons that I keep running marathons, even though I am better at the shorter distances.

I am motivated by working with runners. I’ve trained groups of runners for half-marathons and marathons. Every time a new runner achieves what they didn’t think was possible, I am inspired. I know what it takes to get there. I know the sense of accomplishment that you get when you finish. It’s incomparable.

Wow, Regina, cool post!

You are totally a runner!

It is interesting to me that people didn’t think of you as a runner before your marathon… because of course, I never knew of you before I found your blog… and since my first memory of you is reading your “Run Happy” blog… of course I think of you as a runner…. Always have!

Cool post! I think of you as a runner - its good that people who know you think of you as positive things - runner, science person - and not a “you know what ;)

I’m motivated by the thought that I’ll have kids someday. I want them to have a healthy outlook on life and a good example to follow - not to mention, the healthiest environment I can create for them to begin their lives (my body). I’m also motivated by the runner’s high - and the goal for a long, healthy, happy life - as well as other runners like yourself.
