Hiatus June 5, 2007

Posted by regivizz Injury, Marathon, Running Digg! this story! Digg! this story. , trackback

I’m taking a brief hiatus from running and pretty much all other physical activity due to a back injury.  Hopefully I’ll recover soon and be back out on the trails!  I must say, I’m going STIR CRAZY!  What do you do when you can’t run?  Any suggestions?  I do some weight lifting but (incredible as it is to comprehend) I don’t have a gym membership.

Plans (for now) are to run the St. Jude’s marathon in Memphis this December!

Have any of my readers run that one before?  Any tips?  Any rants or raves about it?  (I’m sure hoping to hear some raves about it!)

Sorry to hear you have a back injury.

Are you restricted from all activity? (I hope you’re not bedridden.)

Of course, I love my bike, I don’t know if you can do that, but if you can, then maybe some light spinning or something like that would at least keep your cardio fitness up.

Swimming? Yoga?

Strength training is never a bad option if you can do it. Building muscle mass will always make you healthier in the long run.

Good luck!

What’s going on with your back? How much time do you need to take off running?

Be patient and listen to your doctors about what you can and cannot do. You’ll want to make sure you are fully recovered before you return to running.

I’ve had to take time off running at least 3 times over the past 12 years. It’s tough for us runners. We are soooo adicted.

St Jude’s looks like a fun marathon. Hopefully, you’ll be back to your training schedule soon!

There’s a woman who comes to the pool where I do most of my swimming who runs in the water. I’m not sure if this is just her ‘thing’, or if she also has some injury that’s on a long, slow recovery. I should also point out that the pool has no deep & shallow ends - it’s a uniform 1.2m. So don’t try it in a normal sloped pool!

What have you done to your back & how long are you out for? Any lessons for the rest of us to (laugh at /) avoid the same problem?

oooh - sorry to hear about your back! Just take it easy, let the break be a real break. Sometimes it’s hard to get both your body and your mind to fully relax when you need to. I feel you on the weight lifting - i don’t have a gym membership anymore and it makes it tough to do any kind of strength training. But hey - who needs a gym anyway.

My PT told me that pool running can really help keep up your aerobic conditioning, at least up through 5K. Swimming, cycling or the elliptical trainer are other good options, depending on how you feel.
I know what you are going through. I have been off running for about 7 weeks now.

That stinks to have an injury! I just got over a knee injury. You might want to look into reading about sports or whatever you are interested in. I find that reading about running when I’m injured keeps me fired up to get back into it when I’m better. Plus, it’s time for me to sit back and learn some more about the sport. Feel better soon!

You might ask around for swimming/water yoga classes. I just heard about them, and they sound ideal for injury recovery. Be well….

Hi - Just wondering how it’s going - on the path to recovery yet?
